A solid start for the lads in our first pre-season game. I thought the players took on the information and key parts of our game plan really well, showing positive signs both in possession and out of possession.
At times, when we executed our principles of “playing forwards and looking for the free player” and “being compact and protecting the middle of the pitch” as a unit, we were able to regain possession really effectively. This is a great starting point for us and something we can continue to build on as the lads train and play more games together throughout pre-season.
In the first half, the game felt a little scrappy at times, and there were moments where we could have shown more patience and control with the ball rather than rushing to play the direct pass. However, I still felt we had good control of the game and created the better chances.
In the second half, we continued to build on this and made some really good decisions in possession. We were particularly effective down the left-hand side, creating overloads and combining well to get behind the opposition defence. Our second goal was a great example of this. A really good combination down the left created the opportunity, with our CAM and ST staying close and making opposite movements to link up and break through. This led to a great finish from Tom Jarvis to make it 2–0.
One key area we need to continue to embrace and improve is defending our goal and reacting quicker to first and second balls during transition moments. We can prevent a lot of dangerous situations by being more aggressive in our duels, fully committing to getting out to the ball and making contact with the opposition player. These are small details that we can continue to develop as a group.
Overall, a really positive start to pre-season. There are plenty of things for us to take confidence from, as well as clear areas we can continue to improve. The most important thing is that we embrace the process, keep building on these principles and continue getting better together as we move through pre-season and towards the league campaign.
A great clean sheet to finish the game as well. 👏⚽
