DERBY DRAMA AS NAAS WHITES BOW OUT WITH HEADS HELD HIGH

Last-gasp leveller can’t save Whites from the drop in fiery season finale

If you wanted drama, intensity, and a script fit for a Hollywood send-off, the Naas derby delivered it all in the final act of the season.

Naas Whites, fighting tooth and nail to avoid relegation, clashed with a battle-hardened Naas Blues side who hadn’t kicked a ball in anger since Easter. But rust? What rust?

The Whites welcomed back shot-stopper Hayden Taaffe, and what a return it was. The keeper, cool as ice under pressure, turned in a season-best performance between the sticks.

From the first whistle, this was no friendly local tie—it was war. Midfield became a battlefield, with Luigi Valente and Rory McCarrick locking horns with the dogged Kebron Futsom and Jake Dunbar in a brutal but brilliant duel. Both teams jabbed and countered like heavyweight prizefighters, but the opening round ended honours even at 0-0.

The second half picked up right where the first left off—pace, passion, and plenty of crunching tackles. Then came the sucker punch. Blues attacker Alex White burst into the box and let fly. Taaffe pulled off a magnificent save but had no answer as the rebound cannoned off unlucky Dan Grant’s shin and dribbled agonisingly into the Whites’ net. 1-0 Blues, and the drop loomed.

But the Whites weren’t done. Not by a long shot.

Jayden Daniel, utility man, midfield engine, and tactical Swiss Army knife drove his side forward with relentless energy. And in the dying embers, it paid off. Ben Cox slipped a delicious pass behind the defence, Daniel latched on and teed up Kaspian Zielenski, who calmly slotted past keeper Ben McCormack. 1-1. Deserved.

The final whistle blew, and with it came confirmation of relegation for Naas Whites. But there was no shame here. Just pride. Grit. And a squad that bled for each other.

Transitioning from Major to Premier and from 9-a-side to 11-a-side was always going to be a mountain. But the boys in white scaled it with bravery, and while they may have slipped at the summit, their spirit never wavered.

To the parents, coaches, siblings and the unsung heroes who braved the cold and the rain—thank you. And to the players: you showed up, you gave everything, and you made your mark.
