Boys U10 (2016) Blue - Athy Town - White U10
Naas AFC Blue 2016 U10s faced a tricky fixture against a well-organised and strong Athy White side on a perfect evening for football.
Naas started brightly and looked like they’d had an extra bowl of Weetabix before kick-off. Within minutes they had carved Athy open a couple of times and there was a growing feeling on the sideline that an early goal was only a matter of time.
The breakthrough came courtesy of a beautifully worked move, finished in style by Henry Dolan. Henry unleashed a thunderbolt from just outside the box that flew low into the corner. Goalkeepers everywhere will tell you the same thing – low and hard is a terrible combination. Great finish and 1-0 to Naas.
The goal seemed to lift the team even further and Naas looked dangerous every time they attacked. Jake Lopez was causing all sorts of problems for the Athy defence, who probably won't be delighted to see his name appear twice in the next sentence. Jake grabbed two quick-fire goals to put Naas firmly in control.
After 12 minutes, Naas made wholesale changes and six fresh players entered the action. Any concerns that it might disrupt the rhythm disappeared quickly as the new arrivals slotted in seamlessly and kept the pressure on.
The fourth goal came from Conor Cronin, who calmly finished after breaking clear from around the halfway line. Athy had pushed forward in search of a way back into the game, but Conor showed the composure of a player who definitely never for 1 min did he think he wouldn't score.
Half-time: Naas 4-0 Athy.
As expected, Athy came out for the second half full of determination and, to their credit, really put it up to Naas. For a spell, they made life difficult and showed exactly why they are such a competitive side.
However, Naas gradually regained control and added to their tally with goals from Cian Tuite and another from Jake Lopez, completing an excellent evening's work.
Athy did manage to grab a deserved consolation goal, and in truth their effort throughout the match merited something on the scoresheet.
In the end, it was a strong performance and a good win for Naas.
A special mention goes to Athy, who showed great respect, sportsmanship and attitude throughout the game. They are a very good side and we have no doubt they'll be eager to return the favour when we make the trip to Athy.
