Women's 1st XV - Hamilton
Oban Lorne Ladies welcomed Hamilton Bulls to Glencruitten park on Sunday 2nd November in tricky conditions with a saturated park. Oban set to capitalise on the weather conditions started strong with some good carries working there way up the park for an early opening try from No. 10 Rachel MacDonald weaving in between the defence and scoring under the posts converted by Ellie McInnes score 7-0. Working the ball well from the restart Oban placed the ball in the capable hands of Poppy McKillop who stormed up the park and ran home her first of the day. A successfully converted kick by Ellie MacInnes saw the score at 14-0. Some strong forward carries from Lindsay MacMillan and Caitlin Fowler saw Oban creep closer to the try line , Rachel MacDonald secured the ball from the back of the scrum and a good release ball to the backs saw Poppy power over the line for her second of the day. Score 21-0 with another brilliant kick from Ellie MacInnes.
Another strong restart from Oban saw the forwards carry the ball hard up the park with a massive run from our Captain Julie Campbell. A Hamilton kick from their try line saw the ball gathered and ran over the line by Katie Mac Corquodale bringing the score to 29-0 with another conversion by ace kicker MacInnes.
An Ellie MacInnes catch from the restart saw her running up the wing at pace with a chip and chase. Julie crashed the ball up the park with an offload to Arden Binnie and a pass to Allana MacKenzie saw her power over the try line for a score under the posts successfully converted by Ellie with the score now 35-0
A Stolen line out from Jordan MacIntyre saw the back line play the ball to the capable hands of number 13 Poppy McKillop who scored her third of the day with another good kick from Ellie 42-0
A Great run from No 8 Lindsay MacMillan from the re start kick into Hamiltons 22 and a quick pick and go at pace for number 9 Evie Kellet far out on the right wing saw her cross the line for a try. An amazing conversion from Ellie practically from the side line! 49-0
Oban gaining moment were relentless in attack and the ball made its way back up the park to the Hamilton try line this time far out on the wing in the hands of Drew Buckley who weaved up the park and scored under posts, converted by MacInnes 56-0
Ellie MacInnes with a good interception was brought back for a Hamilton penalty but the kick didn’t find touch and was caught by Ellie with a chip and chase up the park , with a bit of possession changing and some stolen balls saw Oban back in possession and the ball in the hands of the speedy Amy Gibson who broke through for the last score before the half time whistle with another conversion bringing the half time score to a whopping 63-0 .
Half time
Oban started the second half looking strong. An 8 pick from the back of the scrum in Hamiltons 22 saw good link with backs, and poppy cross the line to score her 4th try with another good conversion with the score now 70-0
Yet another great run from our number 13 PoppyMcKillop saw her blazing up the park , handing off and boshing people down for her fifth try of the day. 75-0
Oban allowed some errors to creep into play and lacking a bit of discipline were penalised for back chat for a short period. Some strong words from the referee and the captain saw Oban settle again. With some huge tackles from Oban, the ball got loose and quick reactions from poppy, saw her score her 6th and final try for the day. A double hatrick no less! Another brilliant kick from Ellie saw the score line at 82-0
Hamilton gained some momentum and were looking very close to scoring but a brilliant try saving tackle from Amy Gibson saw Oban keep the clean sheet.
Before the full time whistle blew Ellie MacInnes added another 7 points on the board with a try and a successful kick, 89-0 was the full time score. Oban showed great communication and team work and were pleased with a very positive performance keeping them unbeaten at the top of the West 2 table. Our next game is away to Marr ladies next Sunday where we will be looking for another strong team performance. Today’s player of the match awarded by Oban was Rachel MacDonald and Ellie MacInnes awarded by Hamilton , a big well done to you both. Oban would like to say a big thank you to Mid Argyll player Kirsty Gibson who put in a shift with some big tackles and a shout out to Rachel Carre who played her first game for Oban ladies with some big runs.
