U8 Calcio Select - Opponent
Against Selby Town, Calcio produced arguably their best performance of the season, running out 10-4 winners in a game that showed progression both on and off the ball.
Calcio actually fell behind early, as having lost the ball in the centre of the pitch, a Selby player was able to score 1v1 with Grayson in net, who otherwise made some great saves, including a brilliant diving effort to the top left corner. After the goal, though, Calcio started to take more control, and deservedly equalised not long later, with Max scoring his first of the game from a Martin assist. Not long later, Max won the ball and fired another shot into the corner, to leave Calcio 2-1 up at the first break.
Having reemphasised some points from training, Calcio started the second third very strongly, with Max completing his hattrick early on. He was followed up by two goals from Will and, and one from Martin, who found the corner following some jinking feet that left the defenders in a muddle. Max also added two assists to his three goals. Some defensive lapses meant the third wasn't perfect, with two goals conceded, but Calcio still went into the final third with a relatively comfortable 6-3 lead.
The final third was arguably our strongest of the season, being led by the brilliant bravery and tenacity of Ted at the back, who seemed to sweep up anything that came his way, stop various attackers in their tracks, and set several counters on their way. Martin made some good stops in net, with just one goal conceded, while Calcio scored some great goals. The first was scored by Grayson, following a third assist of the match for Max, and this was followed by Luca's first goal of the season, which is very well deserved. Will completed his hattrick, following some great play from Grayson, who having taken on a player played a fantastic ball across for Will to finish, and Robin rounded out the scoring, with Grayson grabbing a second assist. Fulltime: 10-4.
All in all, a great performance, and the boys should be proud of their efforts. I was really pleased by the work rate and desire to get back, while gradually the marking of players is improving. Additionally, several players showed the bravery to put into practice the 1v1 work that we did at training last night, with Will's final goal assisted by Grayson, a fantastic example of that. I look forward to a similar performance next week against GT Sports Football, for which we're back to a 9am kick off, so an 8:30am meet.
Have a good week, and see you at training on Friday!
