Tactical Positives
Playing Out from the Back: Fionn passed out to Adam (R-CB) at kick-off along the ground. Adam passed diagonally up to Sean O'Reilly at right back near the touchline. This gave Sean time and space to progress with the ball and pass to Ryan Parletti (RM) beyond the halfway line. This was an excellent application of a training routine to invite the opposition press and create space behind.
Switching Play: Centre backs recycled play and switched the attack across the pitch multiple times.
Width and Support: Wingers held their width well throughout the match.
Passing Weight: Lads adjusted well to the fast astro surface after early passes were slightly overhit, leading to spells of very crisp passing and movement.
Set Pieces & Restarts: Zero foul throws throughout the match, a clear improvement after conceding three in the last friendly.
Areas for Improvement & Tactical Adjustments
Defensive Discipline & Penalty: Conceded a penalty in the second half.
Full-Back Positioning & Cover: While full backs joining the attack via overlaps or underlaps is commendable, it is not the current preference. The team has not yet practised rotating players to cover the vacant full-back position. This strategy will be introduced later once overall fitness improves and defensive cover patterns are drilled in training.
Late-Game Discipline: Shape broke down in the closing minutes of the second half as players pushed forward to get on the scoresheet. This mirrors an issue from early last season that often led to late conceded goals and could cost points in the coming season.
Composure on the Ball: Caught on the ball a few times while trying to build from the back, although I expect this will improve as we practise it more and as confidence grows.
Thanks to Gilmar for organising this.
