Thunder v Christ The King
Stockton Thunder v Christ the King
Full Time: Stockton Thunder 1-4 Christ the King
Line-up: Zack, Reuben, William, Frederick, Harry, Archie, Cai, Mason, Oliver Substitutes: Ben, Austin
A tough test awaited Thunder against a Christ the King side currently sitting second in the league.
CTK started brightly and took the lead after just five minutes with a powerful header from a corner. They followed this up with a second goal from another corner a few minutes later, putting Thunder under early pressure.
Thunder rallied and defended firmly for the remainder of the first half. Zack made some excellent saves and showed good awareness when coming off his line to deal with danger. Reuben and Fred put in some important challenges and blocks, while Oliver worked tirelessly up front, holding the ball up well despite often finding himself isolated against the opposition's pressure. He also did his fair share of defensive work.
At half-time, the team regrouped and focused on sticking to their principles: moving the ball quicker, taking fewer touches and playing into good areas to push the opposition back.
Thunder enjoyed much more possession in the second half and began to create some promising moments. Austin made some excellent runs down the right throughout the half, although he was unfortunate not to quite get the ball under control to create a shooting opportunity.
Mason held the ball up intelligently and linked play into midfield to help build attacks. Archie moved into defence and continued to show great energy, making important clearances while looking to support the midfield. William produced another hardworking defensive performance, making numerous clearances and showing excellent timing with his challenges.
Harry also put in another committed performance. Despite the pressure from the opposition, he continued to play with confidence and looked to switch the play effectively, something he has demonstrated so well over recent matches.
CTK extended their lead with another well-delivered cross that was met by a header, but Thunder continued to look for opportunities of their own.
Ben showed some lovely touches and dribbling ability in midfield. After winning possession high up the pitch, he skilfully moved past a defender before being brought down by a lunging challenge. The referee awarded a penalty, which Ben confidently dispatched into the side netting.
Cai produced another combative midfield performance, breaking up opposition attacks and looking to move the ball forward whenever possible.
CTK added a fourth following another excellent cross, bringing the scoring to a close.
Despite the result, there were plenty of positives to take from the second half, particularly the improved possession, willingness to play forward and continued determination to compete against a very strong opposition.
CPOTM – Mason: Worked tirelessly at right midfield in the first half, both with and without the ball. When moving up front in the second half, he held the ball up intelligently and linked play out wide really effectively.
PPOTM – William: An integral part of a hardworking defensive unit who kept going throughout the match and forced the opposition to really earn every moment of success they had.
