Boys U10's Lightning - Coventry Copsewood

The first official fixture in the Coventry & Warwickshire Youth League for the new look U10 Lightning was away at Coventry Copsewood. Stockton started very strongly, picking up where they have left off in previous friendlies. Jenson controlled the game from the centre of the pitch from the off. An early knock for Albie saw him limp off but he would be back in the 2nd half. Throughout the half the boys played some lovely football, and the pressure told as following a couple of excellent early efforts, it was Jenson who broke the deadlock with a brilliant curling shot from distance off the inside of the post.
We kept up the pressure after the goal, with Ralphie and Daggy looking very dangerous on the wings, making numerous chances for themselves and Marley up top, with us just lacking that final finish. We were also very assured at the back. Any rare times the opposition got past the midfield, Fin, Julian and Lucas were there to intervene. Ernest was also alert and sharp off his line on a couple of occasions to clear up a couple of hopeful through balls.
The only criticism we could have at the half is we should have been more than 1 up.
The 2nd half started with more of the same Stockton possession and pressure, and Ralphie poked home to deservedly put us 2 up. From here the expectation was that we would go on and record a fairly comfortable victory. However, we allowed Copsewood back into the game. 3 late goals saw us end up on the wrong side of the result. Not what we deserved on the overall balance of play but a lesson to be learned that if we are not clinical with our chances and we ease up at all then other teams will punish us.
The lads were obviously disappointed with the result, but can take confidence from the gulf between the teams for the majority of the game.
Goals:
Jenson ⚽️
Ralphie ⚽️
POTM:
Ralphie 🏅 A complete non-stop performance from start to finish. Never stopped running, terrorising Copsewood defenders going one way and working so hard to stop any attacks coming the other way. Deservedly off the mark for the season too.
CPOTM:
Fin 🏅 Another performance full of effort and energy from Fin. His pace and energy is invaluable at the back and great to hear him improve his talking and commanding the back line too.
