Women's 1st XV - Hamilton

Oban vs Hamilton 7th Sep
Oban Lorne Ladies team travelled away again this week to play Hamilton. After a very convincing win the week before the ladies were looking to secure another big win.
The game started with some scrappy play from Oban making it hard work for themselves and not quite settling into set play. After some to and fro McGillvery stole back the ball from a line out, great play and side steps saw a beautiful try from
Ailsa McCuish, score 0-7 with a difficult conversion brilliantly kicked by Ellie MacInnes. 15mins into play Arden Binnie stole back the ball from Hamilton and strong carries from the forwards trucking up the ball and moment of better link play saw a try from Ellie MacInnes and the score now 0-12.
Oban lacking discipline conceded numerous unnecessary penalties making difficult work of the first half. A quick recovery resulted in Oban stealing the ball in the scrum, on our 22, shipped down the line, to the backs and Poppy McKillop broke through numerous defenders and ran it all the way home to score right between the posts. Converted by Ellie MacInnes, score now
0-19.
Just before the first half was brought to a close Rachel MacDonald broke through to score. 0-24 was the score at Half time which on most days should of felt really good but Oban were disappointed and frustrated with too many penalties and wanted to settle more into better set plays and ruck securement in the second half.
Unfortunately the second half didn’t start well with a yellow card for Lindsay Macmillan jacking in ruck.
More penalties crept into play and Oban were constantly having to regain possession of the ball. Some better attacking work saw good running from Amy Gibson helping
Poppy McKillop score a try crashing through the Hamilton line, Jordan MacIntyre successfully took the kick with the score now 0-31.
Oban settled a little more into set play and after some strong forward carries the ball was taken swiftly over the line far out on the right wing by Drew Buckley. Score now 0-36
Sloppy mistakes saw Hamilton gain momentum and luckily an amazing
try saving tackle from Amy Gibson who tackled there player into touch.
Oban let frustration and mistakes take over which saw lots of penalties on our try line which eventually resulted in a well earned try for Hamilton with the score 5-36.
Oban got a penalty in Hamiltons 22, strong carries and trucking up from pick and gos from forwards saw our Captain Julie Campbell storm over the line to score 5-41.
Hamilton managing lots of ball steals from the ruck meant we ended up back close to our try line with just minutes to go, defending hard and tensions high. Luckily a brilliant interception from Rachel MacDonald avoided any more points against us and the ball was kicked out for full time.
Player of the match awarded by Hamilton was Ailsa McCuish for her strong tackling and amazing forward carries and work rate. Well done Ailsa!
Player of the match awarded by Oban was Amy Gibson for her discipline , try saving tackles and line breaking runs. Well done Amy!
A successful bonus point win away from home for Oban with lots to take away and work on this week at training. Our next match is at home against Marr next Sunday 14th September with a 1pm kick off so let’s get a good home crowd to cheer the ladies on and the club house will be open during the ladies game and after for the Scotland England ladies World Cup game at 4pm all welcome.
