Stockton Lightning U11s. 3 v 1 Hurley Kings

An impressive win in tier 2, Coventry & Warwickshire youth league, for Lightning this morning against a strong opposition. Before today we’d played well but finished without a point, but earned the victory today in another competitive match.

We had a compliment from the Kings’ coach, that we are a difficult team to play against, mixing it up with strength, speed, skill, passing and long balls.

That was the story of the first half, Stockton on top going in 2-0 up at half time, and looking in control. The second half was tighter, our keeper mostly untroubled in the first, making a couple of important saves, Hurley did get a goal back but we deservedly got the important third to seal the match.

A big plus for today was our defensive work as a team, going forward wasn’t a problem in previous matches, and we were great at that today too, but we also asked the boys to keep discipline at the back and win their defensive challenges, and they did that very well.

I don’t want to say too much about it, but putting it mildly there was some unnecessary criticism of the ref in our game, they won’t see this, but it’s the opposition parents that need to think about that most. We all have to support and respect the referees, despite our opinion of their decisions.

Because of that the second half got a little disrupted which could have unsettled our lads, but they kept their nerve to get the win.

We can all feel proud of our boys, not just because of the way they played but also because of their general behaviour and spirit.
