Boys U12 (2014) Major - Killcullen
Killcullen travelled to Naas to face a formidable home side determined to reclaim second place in the U12 Major League. The game burst into life from the opening whistle, with both teams trading attacks, but strong defensive displays at either end ensured clear chances were at a premium. As the half progressed, Naas began to gain a foothold in the contest. Moving the ball confidently through the phases and switching play effectively from defence to the wings, they created opportunities for James and Matthew to test the Killcullen back line. Despite the growing pressure, Killcullen remained dangerous on the break, but the Naas defensive trio of Seb, Darragh and Alex were alert throughout, reading the danger well and defending resolutely. The midfield battle was fiercely contested, with neither side willing to surrender an inch. Every challenge, second ball and tackle seemed crucial as both teams searched for an advantage in what was shaping up to be an excellent contest. The first real opening fell to Matthew following an excellent piece of play from Alex K at left-back. Beating his marker, Alex surged forward before delivering a perfectly weighted ball over the top. Matthew controlled it well, beat his man and raced through on goal, but the Killcullen #2 recovered brilliantly to disrupt his stride at the crucial moment. Matthew still managed to get his shot away, but the effort was gathered by the goalkeeper. Naas continued to press. A superb pass from Evan released James down the right wing, and after beating his defender, he picked out Jason in space. Jason's first-time effort looked destined for the corner, but it drifted narrowly wide. With their confidence growing, Naas were beginning to find a real rhythm. Another opportunity followed when the midfield worked the ball into Bobby, who had been a constant nuisance to the Killcullen defence. Finding space inside the box, he got a shot away, but once again the visitors stood firm and defended their lines bravely.
Against the run of play, Killcullen took the lead. GOAL Naas 0-1 Killcullen. The goal came from a somewhat contentious penalty decision, with claims that the ball had struck a Killcullen player's hand before the referee pointed to the spot. Killcullen made no mistake from 12 yards, calmly converting to edge ahead. If the setback affected Naas, they certainly didn't show it. As they have done on numerous occasions this season, the team responded with determination and resilience, immediately taking the game back to the opposition. Sustained pressure forced the Killcullen defence into conceding a corner, and Darragh P delivered an excellent ball into the danger area. Killcullen, however, managed to scramble clear under pressure. Naas continued to push for an equaliser before the break. Another superb delivery into the box picked out Matthew, who rose highest to meet it, but his header flashed narrowly wide of the post.
Half-time: Naas 0-1 Killcullen. Despite trailing on the scoreboard, Naas had shown tremendous character and controlled large periods of the first half. With their intensity, work rate and quality in possession, they looked well placed to get themselves back into the contest.
Naas came out for the second half with renewed purpose and immediately began to put Killcullen under sustained pressure. Their bright start was rewarded when they found the equaliser.
GOAL! NAAS 1-1 KILLCULLEN - Jason
The move started with excellent defensive work from the Naas midfield, who won possession high up the pitch. The ball was quickly worked to James, who drove directly at the Killcullen defence. Cutting inside, he picked out Jason in space, and the striker made no mistake, calmly slotting home a superb finish to bring Naas level. Buoyed by the goal, Naas continued to dominate and it wasn't long before they struck again.
GOAL! NAAS 2-1 KILLCULLEN - Matthew
Another well-worked attack saw Naas force Killcullen into a hurried clearance. The loose ball fell invitingly to Matthew, who reacted quickest and finished emphatically to complete the turnaround. With momentum firmly on their side, Naas continued to create chances. Matthew came close to adding a third, while some outstanding transition play carved out another opportunity for Darragh OT, but unfortunately both efforts drifted narrowly wide of the target.
It was very much a game of two halves. While Naas may not have been at their fluent best in the opening period, they remained comfortable in possession, moved the ball well and largely nullified the Killcullen attack. The second half, however, was a different story. Naas emerged with real intensity, pressing aggressively, passing with pace and purpose, and repeatedly forcing Killcullen onto the back foot.
The final whistle blew with Naas deserved 2-1 winners, although the margin could easily have been greater had they been more clinical in front of goal. Nevertheless, it was an excellent team performance, full of character, quality and determination, and the victory sees Naas climb into second place in the league.

As the season draws to a close, the boys can look back with immense pride on what has been a truly remarkable campaign. In a hugely competitive league, they are battling for a second-place finish, reached the Shield SFs, and made it to the Cup QF's. Those achievements are a testament to their hard work, commitment, and development as a team throughout the season.
What makes these accomplishments even more impressive is the way this has been achieved. I've been tracking the goals and assists all season, and the numbers tell their own story. The team has scored an incredible 75 goals, with 37 of those coming from assists. That statistic highlights something special about this group, not just their quality in front of goal, but their willingness to work for one another, create chances for teammates, and play as a true team.
Every player has contributed to making this season such a success, and they should all be extremely proud of what they have achieved together.
Now, with one final game remaining, there's one more challenge to aim for. The boys are just five goals away from reaching 80 goals for the season. What a fantastic way that would be to cap off an outstanding year. Let's finish strong, enjoy the occasion, and see if we can hit that milestone together!
One last push. One last game. Let's go for 80! ⚽💙
