Boys U12's Thunder - Brinklow
Match Report
The game was played in almost spring-like sunshine, with late changes seeing William start in goal behind a defensive three of Yaz, Jack and Frederick. Across midfield were Reuben, Ethan, Austin and Archie, while Mason led the line up front.
Stockton made a bright start and quickly established themselves in advanced areas, enjoying sustained possession deep in Brinklow territory throughout much of the opening half.
However, Brinklow took the lead early in the half when a shot from the edge of the area took an unfortunate deflection, completely wrong-footing William in goal. Soon after, the hosts doubled their advantage from the penalty spot before extending their lead again following a counter-attack and simple finish at the back post.
Despite the setbacks, Thunder continued to respond positively and maintained attacking intent. Sustained pressure resulted in a flowing move that caused panic for the Brinklow goalkeeper, who slipped while backtracking but recovered just in time to deny Mason’s effort on goal.
Ethan’s impressive footwork created several further openings, while a well-struck free kick was smartly saved. As Stockton pushed to find a route back into the game, play became increasingly stretched, leaving Yaz, Jack and Frederick dealing with several overload situations. Archie worked tirelessly to cover space along the right flank, while Austin quite literally bled for the cause in a determined defensive display.
Half-time: 3–0
Early in the second half, a misunderstanding at the back allowed Brinklow to add another goal. Stockton continued to enjoy plenty of possession but found it difficult to fully exploit space in wide areas.
Mason produced a fine driving run down the left which created several promising openings, but the Brinklow goalkeeper delivered an excellent performance, producing a series of strong saves to deny Thunder a deserved goal. At the other end, William also put in a commendable display, commanding his area confidently and making a number of impressive saves.
As Thunder continued to push forward, Brinklow capitalised on turnovers in possession to add further goals, giving the final scoreline a comfortable appearance.
While the result was disappointing, Stockton played some very good football when in possession — particularly during the first half — and were reminded that defensive organisation across the whole team is vital in keeping goals out. Ultimately, this proved the difference in a contest that was far closer than the final score suggests.
CPOTM: Frederick
Playing on his less preferred left side, Fred put in an excellent defensive performance, getting to the ball first on many occasions and showing good strength throughout.
PPOTM: Archie
Worked tirelessly on the right flank in both defence and attack. Often up against two defenders, he was still able to hold the ball up well and work possession into threatening areas.
