GREAT PERFORMANCE

With Sallins securing the title at the weekend runners up spot was up for grabs on a sunny Tuesday evening at the Sports Centre as 3rd placed Naas played hosts to 2nd placed Newbridge Utd. The lads were asked by the coaches for a fast start and that’s exactly what they got, within 2 mins Riley won a ball high up the pitch and passed inside to Luke who played a first time through ball for Ben to run onto as the keeper rushed out Ben calmly put the ball passed him only for the ball to hit both posts and get cleared by the Newbridge defender. Naas continued to apply the pressure and were playing some lovely football with Scott Byrne and Bobby dominating the midfield while Scott McGarr and Dylan shackled the leagues top scorer whenever Newbridge managed an attack. The first half came to a close with neither side breaking the deadlock.

It didn’t stay that way for long once the second half got underway. Naas again started the stronger and forced a series of corners and in the 5th min Luke’s centre caused confusion in the Newbridge defence and when the ball fell to Ben he made no mistake in finding the back of the net by way of a Newbridge head. The lads tails were now up and and a series of attacks were thwarted by the Newbridge keeper who was in fine form. But on the 15 min mark it was our keepers turn to show his form as an angled shot was on its was towards the top corner Noah sprang and got his finger tips to push the ball behind. This proved to be extremely important as 5 mins later Naas doubled their lead when Scott McGarr intercepted a Newbridge attack and played a precision pass through the defence to find Ben and this time he found the inside of the far corner. Newbridge, with nothing to lose, then went for broke. Wave after wave of attacks were repelled by the Naas back 4 but the centre pairing of Dylan and Scott were exceptional in frustrating the Newbridge forward line. A dramatic finish was set up when Newbridge scored in the 89th minute and the ref somehow found 5mins of injury time but the lads held strong and now know 1 more win will see us finish second.
