Final Score: Dorking Wanderers Reds 9–2 Woking Cougars

Woking Cougars travelled to Surrey Sports Park knowing the challenge ahead, facing a Dorking Reds side sitting second in the table. Early exchanges suggested there was little between the teams, with the opening stages competitive and evenly balanced.

The breakthrough came midway through the first half, and it proved costly. Attempting to play out from the back, a straight pass across our own box was intercepted and calmly finished. That moment visibly impacted belief. Within eight minutes a second followed, as Cougars failed to clear lines decisively and were slow to commit in 50/50 situations.

Losing Oscar to injury shortly after the half-hour mark further disrupted momentum. With only three recognised defenders available, Leonardo and Luke rotated to cover the third centre-back role — a demanding task that would prove difficult to sustain.

At half-time the message was clear: bravery, belief and refusing to fall away — something that has hurt us too often this season.

The response was immediate. Within a minute of the restart Logan struck the post and Rez reacted quickest to convert the rebound. At 2–1, the game felt alive.

However, the momentum swing was short-lived. Two minutes later Dorking restored their two-goal advantage, and what followed was a damaging 12-minute spell that saw the scoreline move from 3–1 to 7–1. Confidence drained and the team struggled to cope with Dorking’s high press. Repeated attempts to play out in identical patterns, without adapting to pressure, led to turnovers in dangerous areas.

To the boys’ credit, there was still quality in moments. In the 64th minute, excellent combination play saw Archie deliver a perfectly weighted pass into Rez, who showed bravery in a 1v1 with the goalkeeper and finished calmly for Cougars’ second.

Yet the mental edge was missing. Urgency after scoring was absent, and Dorking were able to reset without pressure. Two further goals late on completed a difficult afternoon, with many second-half strikes stemming from the same issues — limited awareness of pressure, slow decision-making, and a lack of vocal leadership to reset the team.

This was a tough result and a frustrating one. There are moments where this group shows it has the quality and character to compete at this level. The challenge now is turning those moments into sustained standards.
