U16 Blacks 26/27 - Hawkes 360
An incredibly frustrating afternoon ended in a 3-2 defeat, despite a performance that really should be winning the game. We matched Hawkes physically across the pitch as well as dealing with their direct approach for large periods. In possession, we looked comfortable and created the vast majority of the chances, while their main threat came from playing long.
The opening stages quickly became a vulnerable spell for us, with Hawkes finding some early joy and taking the lead. However, after settling into the match, the team responded well and grew in confidence. From around the 10-minute mark through to the 70th minute, the defensive unit looked assured, dealing effectively with direct play and showing good decision-making.
For long periods, we dominated possession and dictated the game. The build-up play followed a familiar pattern, moving through the GK, into the centre-backs and then into midfield. We were major threat going forward throughout and deservedly worked our way back into the game to grab the equaliser.
Around 60 mins, we went 2-1 in front with a precise free kick into the box from Henry, which was met by Oscar for a well earned brace. At that stage, we looked the more likely side to go on and win. We hit the bar twice, forced an excellent save from their goalkeeper, and created a number of good opportunities. Our play in possession was excellent and we consistently caused problems for the opposition.
The final 10 minutes were ultimately decisive. Hawkes found an equaliser after capitalising on a turnover, which lifted their momentum. As they pushed forward, we were forced into more defensive work around our own penalty area. Right at the end, a long throw into the box wasn’t fully dealt with and they managed to find the winning goal, leaving us beaten 3-2 at the final whistle.
Unfortunately, the game was decided by avoidable moments, and despite controlling large periods and creating the better opportunities, we came away with nothing. A gutting result, but plenty of positives in the overall performance.

Henry was unplayable at times, outstanding in possession and demonstrated he was a class above his opposing midfielders.
