Home vs Newbridge United

This week’s game saw the visit of Newbridge Premier side in the first round of the cup. Coming off the back of a win last weekend along with a couple of solid training sessions midweek, the lads were eager to test themselves against strong opposition.

Newbridge started strong putting the lads under pressure from the outset. John and Matthew had to be alert to attacks down the wing and Sam had a massive task in the centre trying to clear his lines.

Conall’s long kicks provided some early opportunities for Naas to compete in the Newbridge half of the pitch however the Newbridge backs were incredibly solid in dealing with the attacks.

Newbridge broke the deadlock after about 10 wins when Naas failed to deal with the afters of a throw down our right side. Ball found its way into the centre forward who converted a tidy finish to make it 1-0.

Credit to the lads as they didnt drop their heads and kept at it. Logan, Eoin, Geo and the on lon, Rory worked tirelessly in the centre of the park trying to create something for Sean up top but Newbridge worked just as hard to protect their goal.

Newbridge extended their lead mid way through the half when some apprehension at the back allowed them break through. More apprehension led to a third goal with only minutes of the half remaining.

Naas’ best chance of the half fell to Eoin who shot narrowly over with a dipping effort from outset the box following some good work by Adi.

Naas played a better game in the second half creating more chances and reminding Newbridge they was still some football to be played. The midfield worked hard to give Sean a few runs up front and the defence was far more dogged in their efforts to win their individual battles.

Logan, Eoin & Sean all came close for Naas throughout the half however with legs tiring and the coaches trying a few different things, Newbridge added a couple more goals in the latter stages of the half.

Newbridge were good value for their win on the day but there were plenty of positives and learning opportunities for Naas too & the lads will hope this experience stands to them as the season progresses especially with the Naas derby next weekend!
