Stockton Thunder began their first competitive match of the new U13 season with a difficult challenge against Chapelfield Colts, who had been relegated from the division above last season and were expected to be a strong outfit.

Thunder made an excellent start, looking organised, structured and disciplined without the ball. William, Oliver and Jack all set the tone early on with strong challenges and well-timed interceptions, ensuring that the Colts had to work hard to find any space. As Thunder settled, Mason and Cai began linking particularly well down the left, helping Stockton to grow into the contest.

Chapelfield eventually broke the deadlock when a good passing move created an opportunity across the box. Zack produced an excellent parry from the resulting shot, but the Colts striker reacted quickest to the rebound. Thunder responded immediately and almost found an equaliser, producing a superb seven-pass move which switched the ball from one flank to the other. Ethan's excellent cross found Cai, whose sumptuous strike crashed against the crossbar.

With Thunder continuing to compete well, Harry, Archie, Reuben, Ben and Frederick were introduced to enjoy their first competitive minutes of the season. The Colts then extended their lead twice more, with Zack again producing a good reaction save before the opposition reacted quickest to the rebound, followed by a frustratingly simple finish after confusion from a ball into the box.

Thunder deservedly pulled one back before half-time. Ethan delivered a fine corner and Ben rose confidently at the far post to head home as though he had been doing it all his life!

The second half ebbed and flowed, with both teams enjoying spells of pressure. Harry did particularly well holding the ball up and linking with the midfield, while Zack made several excellent saves to keep Thunder in the contest. His most impressive moments included a fine one-on-one stop and a brilliant reaction tip over after the ball deflected awkwardly off Cai.

Thunder showed plenty of resolve and determination, and their attacking play continued to improve. Austin's passing became increasingly confident as the match progressed, helping Stockton build attacks and put the Colts under pressure.

The final ten minutes became increasingly frenetic. Yaz brought fresh energy to the defence, making several key tackles and interceptions, while Archie replaced a tiring Oliver and looked calm and assured in the middle. Frederick then produced an excellent contribution, releasing Ethan into space. Ethan used his strength to break through the defence before finishing powerfully to bring Thunder within one goal.

With the Colts visibly becoming nervous, Thunder pushed hard for an equaliser. A good move almost produced the breakthrough, but despite their late pressure, Stockton couldn't quite find the killer chance they needed.

It was ultimately a narrow defeat, but this was a fantastic first performance from Thunder against a strong side. The organisation, determination and quality shown throughout the game provide plenty of encouragement for the season ahead.

CPOTM – Ben A terrific competitive debut. Ben was confident on the ball, strong in the tackle and capped his performance with an excellent headed goal.

PPOTM – Zack Made countless excellent saves throughout the game, including several outstanding reactions in the second half. His distribution was also excellent, particularly when looking to release the wide players and start attacks.
