U10 Calcio Talent & Select - Yorshire Ammers
In a close encounter, Calcio drew with Yorkshire Ammers 2-2 in their first seeding match of the phase.
Despite playing the better football in the first period, we were unable to find the net despite some good chances in their box. An early goal gave them a 1-0 lead at the break.
After discussing their tactic of overloading our winger using their centre backs, Artie and Duke both had periods as our +1 in midfield, getting across when needed to help the wingers. This nullified the only real threat they had and meant we were able to dominate the rest of the match in and out of possession. We were quickly rewarded with a goal from Lewen on 21’, assisted by Fred. After a series of bad fouls from Ammers, their CM was sent off. Our boys showed fantastic strength and bravery to take these tackles, get up, and keep moving forward, a real credit to them. When we needed to, we matched their aggression, with Lewen and Isaac particularly robust with their return challenges. The professionalism demonstrated to not initially retaliate meant we were able to keep focused and continue with our game plan.
A series of fantastic passing plays in the second half was particularly pleasing to see. Straight off the training ground, one-two passing moves were used to play through midfield and progress into their third for quality chances. We were rewarded with a deserved goal with 2 minutes to go to put us 2-1 up, Freddie’s shot-turned-pass for Lewen to tap home at the back stick. Unfortunately, our only slip in concentration came just a minute later and with only a minute to go in the game. Their left winger got free of his marker, creating an overload, leaving Harry in a 1v2. Calm play from their 11 slid a through ball to their unmarked striker to give them a fortunate late equaliser.
I think we can be pleased with the performance today if not the result. We felt the absence of a number of players which cost us in the end. MoM went to Lewen today who despite not playing his best football never let his chin drop (or head go!), matching their intensity and never giving up.
Onto next week…
